In order to give to the families in our Christmas Project, we need to sort all the hats and mittens. This is done the Friday night before the morning of the big event. Come out and help us sort!
The Optimist Club of Oswegoand, is once again preparing for their “Family Christmas Project”. The Club works with School District 308 to find families in need, that they then set up a sponsor to put together gifts and clothing for the children, as well as groceries for a delicious holiday for the entire family.
The number of families and children increases every year, and the Optimist Club works very hard to provide for all of them. The committee that orchestrates this project, begins months in advance to assure that as much as possible is done for as many as possible. There are fundraisers in place throughout the year that raise money and canned goods for this project. One event is our booth at the local Prairiefest celebration in June serving up the most delicious roasted ears of corn you will probably ever eat. Another is Pumpkin Races held in October in downtown Oswego, it’s a fun and unique event.
For many years, businesses and individuals in the community have participated in our Christmas project. Whether it is by purchasing gifts for the children and families, donating cash (which the club uses to purchase the food), donating hats and mittens at the local schools, or helping distribute the items to the families, there is always a way for someone to take part and give back within the community. For many years, the Optimist Club has been working with the “Toys For Tots” to collect toys, and the Oswego Fire Department donates hundreds of beautiful bikes. Together, these organizations are building a community that cares for each other, and it shows.
